Bret Devereaux’s latest post is about dividing fighters into warriors and soldiers. Like most of his posts it has interesting ideas and is fun to read, but I can see some bits of it which might bother Jean: especially the way he idealizes armies of the 19th century and republican Rome and does not have much time for people who might use their martial skills to stop a fight outside their house or settle a land dispute (which for the record, the republican Romans did too- their laws were based on self-help)
