In historical films set in the middle ages, only the nobles are clean, the the backward / filthy / ignorant commoners who always for some inexplicable reason have early 20th Century Cockney accents, seem incapable of even sawing two boards of equal length. And yet, they always show us huge castles and Cathedral like buildings. One tends to wonder, who built these marvels of engineering? The nobles don’t seem to have the time or inclination, and the “medieval cavemen” don’t seem capable. One never sees any hint of the actual sophistication of medieval engineering. Like building those magnificent bridges you stroll across on your visit to a medieval town center, such as Florence, or Prague.
