    I don’t know how I missed this when it first came out, this monk was hired for the very large sum of 50 gulden, as apparently a tactical expert with wisdom in the deployment of troops, as well as a sorcerer capable of making talismans to protect their militia against bullets.

    It’s worth noting that Basel was hardly a dumb hick town. It was a center of learning and the home of one of the most important Universities north of the alps. Alumni from that school include Sebastian Brandt, Paracelsus, Ulrich Zwingli, and in much later years, Jacob Burckhardt, his student Friedrich Nietzsche, and Carl Jung. Albert Einstein taught physics there.

    Also of course the birthplace of the great fencing master Joachim Meyer.
