Hans HellingerModerator
Thanks for posting, i will check this out today!
Hans HellingerModeratorHere’s a neat link from our friend Jack Gassmann https://thezettelhead.wordpress.com/2020/10/14/river-piracy-in-the-medieval-baltic/
Hans HellingerModeratorNice analysis of what sounds like an interesting and relatively low magic (etc.) system. I too prefer something less “Class” oriented than standard DnD though I approach that in a different way in our character generation system. I wonder why their supplements appear and disappear like that, perhaps some kind of licensing issue? Do they mention Game of Thrones specifically in the game?
Game of Thrones actually first came to my attention on when some people on the old forum mentioned it as a good fit for Codex Martialis, this was quite a while back before the HBO series started.
Have you ever seen the Burning Wheel system?
Hans HellingerModeratorYes it is also related to the issue of so much of the historiography that was emphasized in the last 200 years being that of the Church, or the princely administrations and their courtiers, and later of Absolute Monarchs. So we rarely look at things from the point of view of the burghers and almost never of the peasants.
From the burghers point of view, the Hausmachtpolitik (“Game of Thrones”) of some princely family was pretty pointless. Endless bloodshed which could only made some douchebag more powerful. Mercenary service was tempting work but obviously not done for any cause or idealistic concept of patriotism when selling your sword to a prince. Of course, “mercenary” armies were also recruited by towns for self defense or by landfrieden to keep the general peace, repel invaders and so forth. Here the notion of what counts as a mercenary becomes fuzzier. I think there were actually many gradations.
But even in the purely “mercenary” sense, Germanic and West-Slavic mercenaries did seem to remain pretty loyal so long as they were paid, which is an improvement over a lot of the Condottiere.
Hans HellingerModeratorOh, pardon me, I did confuse you for another user. Care to share anything about your background? No problem if you’d rather not. Anonymous Nom de Plume was very common in the Renaissance!
Hans HellingerModeratorI’m delighted by this as well. I have a copy of the Tacuinum Sanitatis on my shelf, it was enormously influential to the development of European culinary culture and medicine (including the current version of the so called Mediterranean diet) but this article introduces several new interesting avenues for exploration.
Hans HellingerModeratorGreat suggestions, thanks Sean! I will send you an email about the magic thing.
Hans HellingerModeratorHans HellingerModerator“Friend of the club” Jack Gassman just dropped this podcast on cavalry warfare https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tbCR9-ZiZqQLcpiULmlv1hiWhf_CJQdG/view?fbclid=IwAR3VnlC2V6iutawqDGANPZd0omqyLX5n7x_cVOLvIRmT2PIPAQZC26HP7og
Hans HellingerModeratoryes we can do that, I’ll ask Sam
Hans HellingerModeratorGreat feedback with several helpful suggestions. I like “Martial Abilities” and “Combat Abilities”. I like the idea of using Latin too but there are some other games already which do that.

Hans HellingerModeratorMy question would be, though the fencing looks plausible, does the game actually give you enough control to simulate anything even vaguely resembling a real fight?
Hans HellingerModeratorThe lugs are used for grappling too -you can pull someone off their horse for example or pull someones shield down before thrusting into their face. Langets are pretty common on medieval weapons I think.
All in all much, much prettier than my crappy Cold Steel boar spear.
Hans HellingerModeratorYeah, finally watched it, they look a lot better than in most modern video games, I agree. We can thank Bob Anderson I guess…
